Storage of Ancient Coins - AVOID flips that contain PVC (polyvinyl chloride)
We STRONGLY recommend that you AVOID flips that contain PVC (polyvinyl chloride).
Coin Collecting “flips” are a two-by-two-inch size are a very common choice. These clear plastic 2x2 envelopes allow the viewing of both sides and the flip is divided into two sections. The front section is for the coin while the back section is reserved for the paper two-by-two card on which you may enter your attribution.
We recommend that collectors avoid 2x2 flips that contain PVC (polyvinyl chloride) are typically soft and very pliable. These are often used by dealers for mailing coins but should not be used to store ancient coins for the long-term because the resulting oils will eventually ruin the coin, resulting in a greenish slimy coating that is impossible to remove without causing permanent damage. Many of the coins you purchase from a dealer or at auction will arrive in these soft flip which is OK for very short-term storage.
We strongly advise you to remove the coin from flips that contain PVC (polyvinyl chloride) as soon as possible to prevent future damage.
What’s the easiest way to store your coins? We recommend the easiest way to store coins is to use two-by-two-inch Mylar® holders which allows collectors to examine both sides of a coin and in such a manner that fingerprints, dirt and oils cannot be left on the coin’s surface. Mylar® holders are available in sizes to accommodate every size of ancient of coins.
